Cambodian Leader Hun Sen Warns of Heightened Tensions, Says Military on High Alert as Diplomacy Continues
Phnom Penh, August 3, 2025 — Cambodia’s Senate President and former Prime Minister, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, shared updates regarding ongoing diplomatic and security activities in the context of escalating border tensions with Thailand.
In a timely social media post at 3 a.m. today, Hun Sen revealed that he and several colleagues were actively monitoring the situation via video communication. He noted, "All of you are still asleep, but I and some of my colleagues, including Samdech Tea Banh and Army Commander Mao Sophan, are in front of the video system. This was after His Excellency Commander-in-Chief Vong Pisen left to prepare for a meeting in Malaysia tomorrow morning."
Hun Sen also highlighted efforts at the diplomatic level. He reported that Prime Minister Hun Manet and his team were working diligently to coordinate with the International Committee of the Red Cross. Their goal is to facilitate the return of 18 Cambodian soldiers captured by Thailand following a ceasefire agreement, who have not yet been repatriated.
Furthermore, Hun Sen shared that he and his wife contacted frontline commanders, who assured him that Cambodian forces are strictly adhering to the ceasefire. The commanders remain on high alert, prepared for any violations by either side.
In a lighter note, Hun Sen made a humorous remark about health initiatives, stating, "Yesterday, Starbucks was 100% sugar; today, it’s 30% sugar. We are moving toward achieving the goal of 0% sugar to help prevent diabetes."
The Cambodian government continues to actively manage the situation, emphasizing diplomatic efforts and maintaining heightened military readiness while advocating for peaceful resolution.
